{"id":35242,"date":"2021-02-21T19:32:06","date_gmt":"2021-02-21T17:32:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/zimbabwe\/?p=35242"},"modified":"2021-02-21T18:25:20","modified_gmt":"2021-02-21T16:25:20","slug":"bad-mugabe-kept-soldiers-inside-barracks-parties","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/zimbabwe\/all-news\/bad-mugabe-kept-soldiers-inside-barracks-parties","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Bad\u2019 Mugabe Kept Soldiers Inside Barracks \u2013 Parties"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/\">Africa-Press<\/a> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/zimbabwe\">Zimbabwe<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span><b>By Bulawayo Correspondent<\/b> &#8211; AS the nation commemorates Robert Mugabe National Youth Day this Sunday, political parties have expressed mixed feelings towards the late strongman\u2019s legacy with some crediting the once fierce ruler for keeping the military out of national politics.<\/p>\n<p>Mugabe was dethroned in a popular military assisted coup November 2017.<\/p>\n<p>February 21, which is the former President\u2019s birthday, was formally recognised as a national holiday on 24 February 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Zimbabwe founding president Innocent Ndibali credited Mugabe for championing the land reform programme.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, we remember (former) President Robert Mugabe. We promise that expropriation of land without compensation can never be reversed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike him, we are sons and daughters of the soil. We are the soil and the soil is us the economic freedom fighters,\u201d said Ndibali.<\/p>\n<p>He said despite his incarceration during Mugabe\u2019s rule, he still respected the late leader for his uncompromising stance towards the land issue.<\/p>\n<p>The United Kingdom based Ndibali was arrested in 2017 while addressing journalists at the Bulawayo Media Centre.<\/p>\n<p>He was however acquitted of charges of violating his visa conditions.<\/p>\n<p>The Patriotic Front (TPF) said despite achieving some \u201cfew\u201d positives Mugabe\u2019s rein was marred by tribalism, polarisation and violence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur position as a party is that despite the few positives like good education, Mugabe\u2019s legacy has been that of a pseudo-Pan Africanism which resultantly created Zimbabwe as we have now,\u201d said Mxolisi Ncube, TPF spokesperson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMugabe left a divided nation along racial, tribal and political lines. He left a nation of political enemies instead of ideological opponents, a nation whose political activities and literature are laden with blame, insults, violence and a nation of dependents instead of independents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis legacy is that of a nation bereft of national belonging, bereft of self-belief, self-dignity, self-worth and a skewed view on patriotism, a nation of us and them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ncube urged Zimbabweans to forget about Mugabe\u2019s era and move forward as a nation.<\/p>\n<p>MDC Alliance Bulawayo provincial spokesperson Swithern Chirowodza credited Mugabe for loathing military involvement in civilian affairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMugabe was a late convert to the fact that politics should lead the gun. For many years Mugabe disagreed with the securocrats on avoiding the deployment of the army in internal party politics and other civilian matters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe current regime under (President) Mnangagwa has proved that it uses the military as a sjambok in its drawer. That is bad for a people who yearn for freedom,\u201d said Chiroodza.<\/p>\n<p>His sentiments were shared by Zapu spokesperson, Iphithule Maphosa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Mugabe regime, despite its glaring inadequacies, had a semblance of civilian rule while the current regime is a fully blown military rule.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs Zapu, we want to state once again that soldiers should confine themselves to the barracks while civilians should be allowed to democratically choose their leaders,\u201d said Maphosa.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Zimbabwe.
