Africa-Press<\/a> – Zimbabwe<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>President Emmerson Mnangagwa has said local football is \u201cflourishing\u201d despite the fact that the country\u2019s most popular sport has been suspended for 12 months.<\/p>\n

Zimbabwe banned all contact sports, including football, in March last year as part of a raft of measures adopted to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus. Posting on his social media accounts this Monday, President Mnangagwa said:<\/p>\n

Zimbabwean football is flourishing\u2026 I\u2019ve been speaking to football clubs across Zimbabwe, including Dynamos and @HighlanderBosso, to see how we can safely get players back on the pitch and fans in the stadiums.<\/p>\n

President Mnangagwa hosted the Dynamos board and executive at State House on Friday last week. The Dynamos delegation consisted of board chairperson Bernard Marriott Lusengo, club patron Webster Shamu, club secretary Webster Marechera, chief executive Jonathan Mashingaidze, chairperson Isaiah Mupfurutsa and marketing and communications manager Yvonne Mangunda.<\/p>\n

Speaking to the media after the meeting, Mangunda, who also doubles as club spokesperson, said they informed Mnangagwa of the progress the club has made as a business and also challenges emanating from the coronavirus crisis.<\/p>\n

About three weeks ago Mnangagwa also hosted the Highlanders FC leadership led by board chairman Luke Mnkandla, executive chairman Kenneth Mhlophe, the club\u2019s treasurer Donald Ndebele and chief executive officer Nhlanhla Dube at the State House in Bulawayo and promised to assist the club with their mining venture.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
