{"id":39170,"date":"2021-04-25T18:43:02","date_gmt":"2021-04-25T16:43:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/zimbabwe\/?p=39170"},"modified":"2021-04-25T18:21:16","modified_gmt":"2021-04-25T16:21:16","slug":"82-covid-patients-dead-in-iraq-after-hospital-fire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/zimbabwe\/all-news\/82-covid-patients-dead-in-iraq-after-hospital-fire","title":{"rendered":"82 Covid Patients Dead In Iraq After Hospital Fire"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/\">Africa-Press<\/a> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/zimbabwe\">Zimbabwe<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span><b>BBC<\/b> &#8211; AT LEAST 82 people have been killed in a fire at a hospital treating coronavirus patients in the capital of Iraq, Baghdad.<\/p>\n<p>More than 100 others were injured in the blaze, which erupted at the Ibn Khatib hospital on Saturday night.<\/p>\n<p>Reports say an accident had caused an oxygen tank to explode, sparking the blaze.<\/p>\n<p>Videos on social media show firefighters scrambling to extinguish the flames as people flee the building.<\/p>\n<p>Iraq\u2019s Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi on Sunday suspended the health minister and ordered an investigation into the tragedy.<\/p>\n<p>The head of Iraq\u2019s Civil Defence, Gen Kadhim Bohan, said the fire had broken out in the hospital\u2019s intensive-care unit, on a floor \u201cdesignated for pulmonary resuscitation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>About \u201c30 patients were in the intensive care unit\u201d, which was reserved for the most severe cases of Covid-19 in Baghdad, a hospital source told the AFP news agency.<\/p>\n<p>The fire caused many of the oxygen tanks designated to support the #COVID19 patients in the hospital to explode. #Baghdad so far dozens of victims have been reported.<\/p>\n<p>The fire was under control by the early hours of Sunday morning, Iraq\u2019s Civil Defence said.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, the government\u2019s human rights commission said the incident was \u201ca crime against patients exhausted by Covid-19\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Emergency service officials said many patients died when they were taken off oxygen machines to be evacuated, while others were suffocated by smoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce the fire started somebody needed to put the auto central pipes off, which means basically cutting the oxygen from those who need it most,\u201d Halla Sarraf, the director of Iraqi Health Access, a non-governmental organisation, told the BBC.<\/p>\n<p>Iraq\u2019s hospitals have been pushed to the limit during the coronavirus pandemic, adding to the strains wrought by years of war, neglect and corruption.<\/p>\n<p>Covid infections have been rising steeply since February in Iraq, and the total passed the one-million mark this week.<\/p>\n<p>The health ministry has recorded 1,025,288 cases and 15,217 deaths since the pandemic began.<\/p>\n<p>The country launched its vaccination campaign last month, and has received nearly 650,000 doses, most of which have come from Covax, a global programme for sharing jabs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Zimbabwe.
