Africa-Press<\/a> – Zimbabwe<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>The Global Trade Review, the global trade finance magazine, has named the US$296 million project to modernise the Beitbridge Border Post among its top 11 worldwide deals of the year.<\/p>\n

Global Trade Review selects the market\u2019s Best Deals from the previous 12 months.<\/p>\n

According to the magazine, the winning deals \u201cfeature a mix of trade, commodity, supply chain and export finance, as well as fintech-led transactions\u201d.<\/p>\n

Zimborders, a consortium of local businesses, is leading the project to build a new border post.<\/p>\n

The project includes, as part of the deal, building new public amenities in Beitbridge town.<\/p>\n

Zimbabwe has given contractors, including the lead contractor, the JSE-listed construction firm Raubex, up to the end of 2021 to modernise the post.<\/p>\n

According to RMB, upgrading the Beitbridge Border Post ensures a more efficient trading system in Southern Africa because the crossing is the gateway to Zimbabwe and into the SADC region.<\/p>\n

The deal comprises US$194 million of a senior debt facility, plus US$21,9 of equity.<\/p>\n

The mandated lead arrangers on the deal are Absa, Nedbank, RMB, Standard Bank. Lenders include Absa, Afreximbank, the Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund (EAIF).<\/p>\n

The Export Credit Insurance Corporation (ECIC), the South African export credit agency (ECA), acted as a commercial and political risk insurer for the senior debt facility and, alongside Afreximbank, was a political risk provider for a portion of the shareholders\u2019 equity and loan investments. Global Trade Review said:<\/p>\n

_By structuring tranches with ECAs, the banks were able to deliver competitive financing terms through longer tenors and lower interest rates._<\/b><\/p>\n

_The complex transaction took nearly three years to structure and negotiate with the various public and private entities involved._<\/b><\/p>\n

Other winners of GTR\u2019 Deal of the Year include the Cairo Monorail; the \u00a32,4 billion Dogger Bank wind farm in the UK; Enel Green Power supply chain programme in Mexico; Northvolt, a Swedish startup developing lithium-ion batteries; and Tanzania Standard Gauge Railway.<\/p>\n
