Africa-Press<\/a> – Zimbabwe<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>By Paidashe Mandivengerei<\/b> – LOCAL legendary artist and Gallery Delta co-founder, Helen Lieros died this Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Lieros one of Zimbabwe\u2019s finest painters died aged 81.<\/p>\n

The cause of her death has not been disclosed yet.<\/p>\n

Lieros was born in 1940 to Greek parents and thrived in her search for the Greek African identity through her art.<\/p>\n

In 1975, she founded Gallery Delta in Harare together with her husband, Derek Huggins.<\/p>\n

At her gallery, she mentored over 50 young artists who went on to become successful painters.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, Lieros was honoured as one of the National Arts Merit Award Legends.<\/p>\n

National Arts Council of Zimbabwe director, Nicholas Moyo said the nation had lost an arts administrator who made immense contributions to the sector.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith an incredible knack for identifying and nurturing artistic talent, Helen regularly imparted her invaluable visual arts skills to many artists, assisting them to blossom into top-notch creatives,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith the death of Helen, Zimbabwe has lost an exceptionally talented practitioner and arts administrator who contributed to the growth and development of the visual arts by putting the sector on the world\u2019s artistic map. May her soul Rest In Peace,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Lieros\u2019 art was collected globally by renowned galleries including the Paris Museum of African Arts, Wilfredo Lam Centre, Havana, the National Art Gallery of Zimbabwe, and many others.<\/p>\n

In total, she painted about 15 enormous works in the church which included \u201cThe Creation\u201d, \u201cThe Nativity\u201d, \u201cThe Crucifixion\u201d, \u201cThe Entombment of Christ\u201d, \u201cThe Dormation of the Holy Mother\u201d, \u201cThe Judgement\u201d, \u201cHomage to the Holy Fathers\u201d and concluded in 2002 with \u201cThe Pantocrator\u201d.<\/p>\n

In 2008 carried out more work on other walls and worked on \u201cThe Massacre of Infants\u201d, \u201cThe Trial of Christ\u201d, and \u201cThe Procession of Soldier Saints\u201d and \u201cThe Ephitafios\u201d completed in 2009. The final recall was in 2013 when she executed \u201cThe Baptism of Christ\u201d, \u201cChrist Asleep in the Tempest\u201d and \u201cThe Healing of the Blind Man\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
