{"id":46589,"date":"2021-09-12T19:44:03","date_gmt":"2021-09-12T17:44:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/zimbabwe\/?p=46589"},"modified":"2021-09-12T19:19:17","modified_gmt":"2021-09-12T17:19:17","slug":"gokwe-travellers-pay-high-fares-as-zupco-fails-to-serve-routes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/zimbabwe\/all-news\/gokwe-travellers-pay-high-fares-as-zupco-fails-to-serve-routes","title":{"rendered":"Gokwe Travellers Pay High Fares As ZUPCO Fails To Serve Routes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/\">Africa-Press<\/a> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/zimbabwe\">Zimbabwe<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span><b>By Staff Reporter<\/b> &#8211; TRANSPORTERS in Gokwe North, Midlands province are taking advantage of the district\u2019s poor road networks and absence of ZUPCO buses to charge an arm and a leg in the district.<\/p>\n<p>Gokwe North district development coordinator Stewart Gwatirinda told NewZimbabwe.com in an interview that travelling was posing a nightmare for the local villagers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have severe road network challenges to the extent that we are one of the districts without the ZUPCO buses which makes travelling very expensive even for short distances,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Traditionally, Gokwe North has a bad road network system.<\/p>\n<p>The situation, however, was worsened by the heavy rains that pounded the country early this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe rain season was characterised by excessive rains and flooding. Roads were destroyed and the network system is now in dire straits. This means some roads are difficult to tread on and hard to reach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApart from that, the local transporters charge exorbitant fares for very short distances, a situation which now worsens the hardships of our people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Gwatirinda added the government\u2019s Emergency Road Rehabilitation programme was a welcome development for the rural community as roads were being repaired and resurfaced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is our hope that they will do a splendid job before the rain season starts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Midlands Senator Maybe Mbowa also bemoaned the poor infrastructure in Gokwe North despite the vast mineral resources, cotton farming and tourism potential in the district.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGokwe North is still lagging behind we don\u2019t have enough water. We need more boreholes, we need more dams, we need our roads to be rehabilitated, and most areas are inaccessible,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor instance, Chireya and Kabiyuni are not accessible at all when it rains. It\u2019s very dangerous when roads are inaccessible it means agriculture is affected, it even means business is affected.
