Africa-Press<\/a> – Zimbabwe<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>Local teachers\u2019 monthly salaries have been eroded by 50% due to inflation and the rise in the cost of living.<\/p>\n

This was said by the Amalgamated Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) on Tuesday as teachers across the globe celebrated World Teachers\u2019 Day under the theme; \u201cTeachers at the Heart of Education Recovery.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a statement, the union said teachers, especially in rural Zimbabwe are living in \u201csub-human conditions\u201d due to the unavailability of proper housing. ARTUZ said:<\/p>\n

Teacher\u2019s salaries have been eroded to less than 50% of the Total Consumption Poverty line (TCPL) due to inflation and the rise in the cost of living and some of the demands by teachers are welfare issues like housing which has proven to be a great challenge especially for those stationed in rural areas who stay in sub-human conditions and are often exposed to risk due to the conditions they will be living under.<\/p>\n

ARTUZ noted that the learning environment in the country\u2019s schools was not safe for both learners and teachers and this would ultimately negatively impact the quality of education. The union said:<\/p>\n

The government must adhere to Standard Operating Procedure Set by the World Health Organisation.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s sad to note that the government had not adequately prepared for schools to opening with regards to COVID-19 preventative measures.<\/p>\n

Schools are now hotspots and this has been confirmed by the Ministry of Health. This puts teachers at risk of exposure to the virus and unfortunately, this affects the quality of the service provided.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
