Africa-Press<\/a> – Zimbabwe<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>The Guardian<\/b> – BENEATH a corrugated iron roof in the crowded Harare suburb of Mbare, a group of boys darts back and forth across a smooth concrete floor, firing a series of rapid punches into the air.<\/p>\n

A wiry older man, dressed in low-slung tracksuit bottoms and flip-flops, watches their moves, encouraging them to \u201cJab! Jab! Jab!\u201d.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a long way from a glamorous black-tie occasion in Glasgow in January 1998, when Arifonso Zvenyika beat Scotland\u2019s Paul Weir to take the Commonwealth flyweight title for Zimbabwe.<\/p>\n

Nicknamed \u201cMosquito\u201d \u2013 reflecting his 50kg fighting weight and his deadly skills \u2013 Zvenyika is one of the country\u2019s most successful boxers.<\/p>\n

However, there is little to show for those early triumphs. Now 45, Zvenyika lives hand to mouth, hustling like so many others in a country where up to 90% of working-age adults are not formally employed.<\/p>\n

When he\u2019s not struggling to put food on the table for his own family, he trains young people for nothing at the Mosquito Boxing School of Excellence.<\/p>\n

\u201cI grew up without anything \u2013 even now I don\u2019t have anything, but I can share boxing with less privileged children,\u201d says Zvenyika, who is proud to have been born and raised in Mbare.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe champions always come from the ghetto,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

Three times a week, up to 20 young people \u2013 aged from eight to their early 20s \u2013 gather for fitness training and to develop their technical skills.<\/p>\n

Zvenyika says that he particularly focuses on boys and young men who struggle to remain in school and spend time on the streets.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome of the kids are totally poor and not even going to school. Some draw back from training as they don\u2019t have shoes,\u201d says Zvenyika.<\/p>\n

One of the boys, 16-year-old Noel Sunday, says: \u201cBoth my parents are unemployed. I only did four years of school. I haven\u2019t done my O-levels.\u201d<\/p>\n

A chalkboard in the gym reminds the young boxers to \u201cGo hard or go home\u201d and lists 10 rules. Eating, smoking and even laughing and jokes during sessions are prohibited.<\/p>\n

\u201cBoxing not only teaches discipline, but also positive values. It\u2019s a low-cost, high-impact sport,\u201d says David Mutambara, a former chair of Zimbabwe\u2019s Sports and Recreation Commission.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople paint a bad picture of Mbare, but it\u2019s a talent hub,\u201d Zvenyika.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut there is a scarcity of resources in this country. We get people who have natural, raw talent. The skills development needed to polish that raw talent is lacking.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zvenyika is reliant on others to provide training space, and is constantly on the hunt for more equipment. The school is short of gloves, pads, punchbags and headgear.<\/p>\n

The rest of the time he spends looking for work.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m shy to say it, but I can\u2019t afford to feed my family properly,\u201d he says. \u201cWe eat bread without butter, we drink tea without milk.\u201d<\/p>\n

A few miles from the centre of Harare, Mbare is chaotic and densely populated. It\u2019s a first stop for arrivals to the capital who come looking for work.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy family makes money running around the marketplace and helping to carry people\u2019s luggage,\u201d says Tatenda Kachepa, 22, who has trained with Zvenyika for five years and is one of the club\u2019s star boxers.<\/p>\n

The pandemic pushed many people already struggling to earn a living into desperation.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are now 15 people living together at my father\u2019s place,\u201d says Kachepa, who is still trying to complete his schooling.<\/p>\n

\u201cDuring Covid, we haven\u2019t made any money. It\u2019s been a dog-eat-dog situation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Substance abuse, already widespread in Harare\u2019s low-income areas, has become more of a problem during the pandemic.<\/p>\n

Illicit alcohol, marijuana and methamphetamine \u2013 better known as crystal meth or by its street name mutoriro \u2013 are all popular among young people.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been there myself,\u201d says Zvenyika of his own drug-taking past. \u201cIt hurts me to see these young kids doping. I\u2019m trying to find ways to stop them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zvenyika\u2019s story is a familiar one \u2013 from rags to riches, followed by a slide into bad choices and prison.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mother tried her best, but she didn\u2019t have money to send me to school,\u201d says Zvenyika, who turned professional at 17.<\/p>\n

\u201cI took up boxing as something to resolve my pain and calm me down.\u201d<\/p>\n

After his talent took him to Zambia and Australia, as well as to Scotland, Zvenyika crashed back down to a very different reality.<\/p>\n

Accused by a neighbour of stealing a radio \u2013 Zvenyika insists he was framed \u2013 in 2000, the boxing champion was sentenced to two and a half years in prison.<\/p>\n

Although he continued to fight after his release, Zvenyika\u2019s imprisonment \u2013 and a stroke while in jail \u2013 effectively ended his professional career.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been in prison, in hospital, in a hooligan\u2019s cell. I don\u2019t want others to fall into that pit,\u201d says Zvenyika. \u201cI\u2019m trying to move them to be good people.\u201d<\/p>\n

And he is confident that Mbare\u2019s younger generation has sporting potential.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople paint a bad picture of Mbare, but it\u2019s a talent hub,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

\u201cYoung guys can get into bad things, but training keeps them busy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Strict lockdowns closed the club for much of the past 18 months, but as of last month Zvenyika has welcomed back his young students.<\/p>\n

He is determined to keep the Mosquito boxing school open, despite the challenges.<\/p>\n
