{"id":51074,"date":"2021-12-09T20:50:29","date_gmt":"2021-12-09T18:50:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/zimbabwe\/?p=51074"},"modified":"2021-12-09T19:04:39","modified_gmt":"2021-12-09T17:04:39","slug":"war-veteran-everisto-nhamo-dies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/zimbabwe\/all-news\/war-veteran-everisto-nhamo-dies","title":{"rendered":"War Veteran Everisto Nhamo Dies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Zimbabwe. <\/strong><\/span>Dennis Mushonga whose Chimurenga name was Cde Everisto Nhamo has died.<\/p>\n<p>Cde Nhamo who was ZANU PF Mashonaland Central Province provincial war veteran executive member died last Sunday at his home in Glendale after an illness.<\/p>\n<p>He joined the liberation struggle in 1972 after being recruited by the late General Solomon Mujuru at St Albert\u2019s Mission in Mt Darwin.<\/p>\n<p>The chairman of Mashonaland Central War Veterans Association, Richard Chirongwe said the association has lost a brave freedom fighter.<\/p>\n<p>Chirongwe said they had forwarded a request for Nhamo to be accorded National Hero Status.<\/p>\n<p>Nhamo first received military training in the battlefront and was later sent to Tanzania where he received further training at Mgagao military academy.<\/p>\n<p>He became a member of the Zanla General Staff in 1974 and operated in Mt Darwin Muzarabani and Rushinga.<\/p>\n<p>Nhamo was part of a group that attacked Altena farm together with General Mujuru. He survived the epic five day battle at Mavhonde in Mozambique.<\/p>\n<p>He was also part of a group of fighters who established Zhunda and Nyadzonia refugee camps together with the likes of Tracy Sarudzai Chakananga, Tsanangurai popularly known as Cde Tsana Cde Dadirai, now Brigadier General Chitsungo, the late Timothy Gutura, Charles Saudi among others.<\/p>\n<p>At Independence, Nhamo joined the National Army signals and communication but later retired on medical grounds.<\/p>\n<p>Mourners are gathered at house no 1500 Highway Glendale.
