Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. <\/strong><\/span>Zambia\u2019s ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) has been accused of intimidating and harassing judges and magistrates after the party\u2019s youths yesterday in Lusaka called for a complete overhaul of the Judiciary.<\/p>\n

UPND Lusaka Province Chairperson, Anderson Banda said that the judiciary is a disappointment, looking at how it handles various alleged corruption cases.<\/p>\n

He made the remarks when he led a team of party supporters in what he termed solidarity with President Hakainde Hichilema, at the Magistrate Court where Bowman Lusambo, Raphael Nakacinda and Given Lubinda were appearing for various cases.<\/p>\n

The trio had to be whisked away by police after their court cases were adjourned.<\/p>\n

PF member, Raphael Nakacinda; who appeared for the defamation of the President\u2019s case, to have his matter referred to the Constitutional Court, was rejected.<\/p>\n

The matter has been adjourned to 20th June for possible commencement of trial.<\/p>\n

Lusaka Times describes the actions of the UPND youths as barbaric adding that they \u201cundermine the independence of our judges and magistrates and the rule of law in general.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lusaka Times editorial urged the party to, \u201cLet our judges and magistrates decide cases in an impartial manner. The way to achieve this impartiality \u2013 to allow judges to decide cases based on what the law actually requires, and on nothing else \u2013 is to ensure that judges and magistrates are independent, or, put differently, not subject to reprisals for decisions they make on the bench.\u201d<\/p>\n

The editorial told the party that if judges misconduct themselves, there\u2019s the Judicial Complaints Commission to deal with that, \u201cmake your complaints there, don\u2019t resort to anarchy.\u201d<\/p>\n
