Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. <\/strong><\/span>Motorists have commended the government\u2019s long-awaited decision to decentralise the issuance of vehicle number plates.<\/p>\n

ZBC News\u2019 Wellington Makonese reports that the long queues that characterised the Central Vehicle Registry (CVR) in Harare are now a thing of the past.<\/p>\n

After complaints by members of the public, a blitz was carried out at CVR to seek ways of improving the situation, while the issuance of number plates has been decentralised to ZIMRA and ZIMPOST offices.<\/p>\n

The CVR is now focusing more on corporates, replacements and emergencies.<\/p>\n

Makonese quotes one motorist who applied for a number plate this Thursday as saying:<\/p>\n

The situation has totally changed its now hundred percent efficient here. I applied yesterday and today I got mine.<\/p>\n

Just about this January, the Central Vehicle Registry was the centre of anarchy and disorder as motorists stampeded for vehicle number plates due to a combination of poor workmanship, centralisation and demand.<\/p>\n

The decentralisation drive might just have been the masterstroke as queues have vanished. Another motorist commented:<\/p>\n

I haven\u2019t collected mine as yet, but just as I applied yesterday and today have come to collect and it\u2019s a matter of time before I leave.<\/p>\n

Another one said there were many centres for collection making it easier for members of the public to apply and collect.<\/p>\n

The constitution of Zimbabwe states that the central government has to support the issuance of essential services in all provinces and tiers of government to ensure that the local people also have access to the services without travelling to the capital or other big cities.<\/p>\n
