Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. <\/strong><\/span>Mukachana Hanyani, a correspondent for The Herald, a state-run publication, has accused some government workers of creating an unworkable environment by joining opposition politics.<\/p>\n

Hanyani\u2019s statement comes as workers are threatening to down tools over poor salaries and working conditions. They met with the employer on Monday with the latter sticking to the initial offer of increasing the ZWL$ salary by 100 per cent.<\/p>\n

Workers have rejected the offer saying it is insignificant given the soaring inflation. Hanyani said workers\u2019 demands have to be reasonable. Said Hanyani:<\/p>\n

Of late, some Government workers have directly and indirectly joined opposition politics, thereby creating an unworkable environment in the public sector.<\/p>\n

Whatever efforts the Government is undertaking to cushion workers are not recognised and appreciated.<\/p>\n

Recently, Government awarded its workers a 100 percent salary increment on top of the US$175 Covid-19 allowance, as an inflationary cushion.<\/p>\n

The Government went further to promise the workers that negotiations for another round of salary increments would go on until both sides are satisfied.<\/p>\n

Surprisingly when everyone thought the Government has done well for its workers, Teachers Unions and Public Service Association on July 4, jointly gave the Government a 14-day notice of an industrial action for more salary increments and other benefits.<\/p>\n

Hanyani added that there was \u201ca third hand manipulating government workers\u201d to always blame the \u201cGovernment even where it would have done well.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hanyani added that workers are failing to appreciate government initiatives and such behaviour suggests that \u201csome civil servants\u2026 are being used by agents of regime change who are vigorously fighting for the downfall of the ruling party.\u201d<\/p>\n

Workers have always denied the accusations saying they don\u2019t need to be paid by agents of regime change for them to realise that their salaries are not enough to cover their essential needs like food, shelter and school fees.<\/p>\n
