Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. <\/strong><\/span>Former University of Zimbabwe (UZ) vice chancellor Levi Nyagura has been removed from remand in a case he was facing numerous counts of fraud, reported NewZimbabwe.com<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Nyagura was jointly charged with UZ top officials, Lazarus Mabvira and James Chipendo.<\/p>\n

The trio was removed from remand by Harare magistrate Dennis Mangosi who ruled that the State had failed to prosecute them since 2018.<\/p>\n

The magistrate said there was no reason to keep Nyagura and his co-accused on remand when it was not clear when their trial shall commence.<\/p>\n

He ordered prosecutors to continue by way of summons.<\/p>\n

Allegations were that sometime between 2015 and 2018, the trio connived on various occasions to prejudice UZ through the \u201cdubious\u201d awarding of tenders.<\/p>\n

Allegations were that on 23 August 2015, three companies, namely Frenzy Investments, Tynwald Sawmills and Bright Tree Cutters, responded to Mabvira\u2019s request for quotations to cut 5 trees in front of the northern wing of Manfred Hodson compound.<\/p>\n

On 6 November 2015, Mabvira allegedly connived with Nyagura and awarded the services to Tynwald Sawmills without soliciting for quotations from at least three competitive bidders.<\/p>\n

UZ allegedly paid US$9 950 to Tynwald Sawmills to cut down five trees at the institution.<\/p>\n

However, there was neither a security check nor a storekeeper\u2019s signature to confirm that the services were rendered.<\/p>\n

Prosecutors further alleged that Frenzy Investments and Tynwald Sawmills are owned by the same directors, while Bright Tree Cutter is not registered.<\/p>\n
