Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. <\/strong><\/span>TWO men died while three others were injured in a mine explosion that occurred at a gold mine in Mberengwa on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko yesterday confirmed the incident.<\/p>\n

\u201cTwo men died on the spot, while three others escaped with varying injuries after an explosion in a mineshaft,\u201d Mahoko said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is alleged that James Ndebele (38) of Maglas township in Zvishavane and Alfred Hove (19) of Village Bricks under Chief Bvute in Mberengwa were working underground in a mineshaft, while three other miners were working outside (the mine shaft).<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile working underground, Hove asked for fire to light his cigarette and one of the miners threw a burning log into the mineshaft and it landed on top of explosives, which exploded, killing Ndebele and Hove instantly.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said the three miners who were outside the mineshaft sustained varying injuries after being hit by flying objects from the explosion.<\/p>\n

Mahoko said police have since instituted investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident.<\/p>\n

He, however, urged miners to observe safety rules at their workplaces.<\/p>\n
