{"id":9665,"date":"2019-06-03T19:30:49","date_gmt":"2019-06-03T19:30:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\/zimbabwe\/?p=9665"},"modified":"2019-06-03T19:30:49","modified_gmt":"2019-06-03T19:30:49","slug":"govt-bans-tocky-vibes-song-over-offensive-lyrics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/zimbabwe\/all-news\/govt-bans-tocky-vibes-song-over-offensive-lyrics","title":{"rendered":"Govt Bans Tocky Vibes\u2019 Song Over \u2018Offensive Lyrics\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ) has banned Zimdancehall artist Tocky Vibes\u2019s new release dubbed African Queen (Binga).<\/p>\n<p>BAZ said that the song is inappropriate to be played on air as it carries what the regulatory authority calls \u201coffensive lyrics\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter to all radio stations, BAZ said:<\/p>\n<p>We advise that we have received a complaint about the song \u2018African Queen\u2019 by Tocky Vibes.<\/p>\n<p>The complainant has indicated that they find some parts of the lyrics of the song offensive as they appear to denigrate the people of Binga.<\/p>\n<p>Ukaenda Binga vanhu vanenge vakashama, ukagara Binga uchange wakashama (if you visit Binga you will see naked people, if you stay in Binga you will be naked).<\/p>\n<p>However, Tocky Vibes, real name Obey Makamure, said that his lyrics have been misunderstood as he did not seek to cause any offence. He said:<\/p>\n<p>This song actually praises women, it celebrates African women. My inspiration for the song and video came from Jah Prayzah\u2019s song in which he showcases the culture of the people of Binga.<\/p>\n<p>I said to myself, these are the people that still represent Africa.<\/p>\n<p>They may not walk around like that today but that is their culture, we should be having problems with people that celebrate clothes because clothes were not part of our culture.
