Africa-Press – Angola. Two solar parks for the production of photovoltaic energy with the capacity to generate 285 megawatts come into operation today, in the municipalities of Catumbela (Biópio) and Baía Farta, in the province of Benguela, after being inaugurated by the President of the Republic, João Lourenço.

The first of the two solar parks in Benguela, located in the town of Biópo, was inaugurated a few moments ago by the President of the Republic.

On the occasion, the Minister of Energy and Water, João Baptista Borges, recalled that replacing thermal energy with solar energy represents a saving of 275 million liters of diesel fuel per year.

“The impact of these solar parks in reducing the impact of CO2 emissions is around 935 thousand tons/year”, he said, before adding that the objective is to increase the weight of renewables in the energy matrix, from 60 to 75 %.

The minister also informed that the two solar energy production parks built in the province of Benguela are part of a total of seven under construction in the cities of Luanda, Lucapa (Lunda Norte) and Saurimo (Lunda Sul) and are expected to be completed in 2023
