Africa-Press – Angola. Issues related to peace and security in the Great Lakes Region, with particular focus on the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Central African Republic (CAR), were addressed at the United Nations headquarters, in New York, this Monday, by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António.
According to a press note from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs sent, the minister had a courtesy meeting with the undersecretary general and head of the Department for Political Affairs and Peacebuilding of the United Nations Organization, Rosemary DiCarlo.
The interlocutors also addressed the process of mediation of the dispute between Rwanda and the DRC, carried out by Angola, with emphasis on the trips of the Angolan President, João Lourenço, to the cities of Kinshasa and Kigali, to dialogue with his counterparts.
The meeting held in Washington, between President João Lourenço and the leaders of the Great Lakes region, on the sidelines of the US-Africa summit, was also mentioned at the meeting.
Rosemary DiCarlo took over as UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs on 1 May 2018.
He is an adjunct to the Secretary-General of the United Nations for global peace and security issues, in addition to being responsible for overseeing electoral assistance, provided annually by the United Nations to its Member States.
In the continuation of his diplomatic agenda at the headquarters of the United Nations, the minister met with the permanent representative of China at the UN, Zhang Jun,
with whom he discussed the support of the members of the Security Council of the United Nations for the Ad- Hoc.
This mechanism is led by the general officer of Angola, to monitor the eastern border of the DRC and the Luanda process, within the scope of the Angolan mediation of the conflict between the DRC and Rwanda.
The support of the members of the Security Council is limited to the next resolution of this body, which seeks to extend the mandate of the United Nations mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The Angolan official also held a meeting with the permanent representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations Organisations, Vassily A. Nebenzia.
The meeting between the two entities took place at the headquarters of the United Nations and dealt with issues related to the support of the members of the UN Security Council to the Ad-Hoc verification mechanism.
