Africa-Press – Angola. The Minister of Youth and Sports, Ana Paula do Sacramento Neto, was dismayed by the death of the former goalkeeper and captain of the national senior women’s handball team, Elisa Peres, which took place on Monday, victim of illness.

In a message of condolences, the head of Juventude e Desportos considers her former teammate to be a great player who dedicated herself entirely to the clubs she passed through and to the national teams, at the most different levels.

“The death of Elisa Peres constitutes a great loss for handball and for sport in general. Her example of selflessness must be followed by the new generation of practitioners. My deepest condolences to the bereaved family”, reads the note. The Angolan Handball Federation (FAAND), in a statement, also expressed dismay at the unfortunate event.

According to the communication, Elisa Peres was part of the team that won the first African Senior Championship in 1989, where athletes such as Palmira Barbosa, Ana Paula do Sacramento Neto (current Minister of Youth and Sports), Fábia Raposo and Elisa Webba emerged.

In the document, the federation considers that the unsuccessful woman did her best for Angolan sport, in particular handball, whose female sector holds hegemony in Africa. The goalkeeper began her career on the 13th of September, in Malanje province, but it was at Petro de Luanda where she emerged until she reached the national teams.
