More than 400 seniors receive basic food baskets in Lubango

Africa-Press – Angola. Four hundred 63 elderly people in the municipality of Lubango, controlled by the central and southern regions of the National Council for the Defense and Protection of the Elderly (IDNC), received yesterday, Sunday, in this city, basic food baskets, donated by the provincial government, as part of Christmas supportive.

These are foodstuffs such as corn meal, rice, salt, oil, margarine, preserves and pasta, and hygiene and cleaning products such as detergents and soap, to support vulnerable elderly people.

In expressing her satisfaction, the elderly Inácia Chilombo, 61 years old, thanked the government’s initiative for having minimized the lack of food in her residence.

Another elderly person, Laurindo Jeremias, 64 years old, stressed that the donation is welcome, at a time when he lives in very poor conditions, which is why he encouraged initiatives of the kind.

In turn, the president of the central and southern regions of the National Council for the Defense and Protection of the Elderly (IDNC), Mario Silvano Vikeya, said that the donation is the result of a request recently made to the governor of Huíla, Nuno Dala, to support the elderly in festive season, as they live in conditions of extreme poverty.

According to him, the council, as a civil society entity, will continue to develop actions that aim to help elderly people posted in the center and south region with food, as well as in the field of entrepreneurship, a strategy created to take them out on the streets where they have been ask for alms.

He added that the elderly have suffered violence, especially within the family, at a time when there is a constant degradation in the standard of living of Angolan families, due to the high cost of living.

He said that it was in this perspective that the National Council for the Defense and Protection of the Elderly created an agricultural and livestock cooperative, exploitation of mineral resources and handicrafts, called “Hope for the future of tomorrow”, in the context of combating poverty.

On the occasion, he reinforced the appeal to the business class, natural and legal persons, in order to support the elderly as a result of their high degree of vulnerability, since a large part of these do not have a retirement pension or employment relationship with public services

The association was created in 2002, with the aim of supporting the elderly and families in conditions of extreme state and vulnerability and controls 61,701 members in the two regions, center and south.
