Africa-Press – Angola. At least five tons of rice were harvested in the municipality of Puri, province of Uíge, during the first agricultural season.
The municipal manager of the EDA, Julião José Francisco, needed to have accounted for, in the month of January, an income of approximately 5.5 tons of rice, produced by peasant families in Puri, which indicates a tendency for this indicator to increase, judging by by the amount of cultivated areas.
“In terms of rice production, we are on the right path, taking into account the engagement of families in the production of this product”, he said. He added that the increase in production is being facilitated by the climate and the soils suitable for this type of crop.
Julião José Francisco recalled that lately there has been a return to rice production by the population of the municipality of Puri, a task that had already been abandoned and whose stimulus is due to the application of the mechanisms of the Program to Combat Hunger and Poverty.
“Now, there is a great tendency to increase rice production areas, although traditional methods are still being used on a large scale”, he noted. Sanza Pombo, then, in the view of the agrarian engineer, this will contribute to the increase and diversification of family income, as well as to the economy of the province of Uíge.
The Puri Administration is encouraging farmers and other peasant families to invest in rice cultivation and, with great commitment, participates in the provision of instruments that allow working the land.
“We will continue to work with agricultural and family businesses, to increase production spaces, as well as productive income, with support in the mechanization of land agriculture, in the supply of work tools, with the purpose of leaving subsistence agriculture and move towards market agriculture”, highlighted Julião José Francisco.
