The African Union (AU) Commissioner, Josefa Correia Sako, on Friday (4th) asked the African Development Bank (AfDB), in Addis Ababa, for funding for the implementation of projects aimed at ensuring food security on the continent. , within the framework of the organization’s theme “Nutrition and Food Security”.
Leaving a meeting held at the African Union headquarters with the vice-president of the AfDB, Beth Dunford, the diplomat said that nutrition and food security are “the focus of the battle” that the organization is prepared to carry out, whether at a regional and national level, in the framework of the materialization of the recommendations of the common position of Africa and of the United Nations Summit on Food Systems.
Josefa Sako informed that the African Union Commission has intensified efforts to achieve environmental sustainability, resilience of African economies and communities for the modernization of the agrarian system, within the framework of accelerated economic growth, to achieve the goals of Agenda 2063.
Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, according to Josefa Sako, depends on decision-making and climate action in development sectors such as Agriculture, Energy, Health, among others, whose implementation lacks resources. financial resources, without losing sight of actions to reduce the risk of accidents and natural disasters.
Most African economies, the diplomat stressed, are based on agriculture, encompassing societies and communities that depend, to a large extent, on the environment and its resources, which presupposes challenges inherent to vulnerability arising from the deficient management of the respective environment. environment, climate change, population growth and other situations linked to low technological development.
The Blue Economy was another topic of discussion between the African Union Commission and the AfDB, in which, in the words of Josefa Sako, the regional bank recognizes the mutual interest in advancing various sectors, as well as providing adequate funding for continental projects.
Regarding the environment, the AU Commissioner said that it was urgent to obtain resources for the elaboration of an environmental strategy focused on the environment, including the circular economy, as well as support to facilitate the work of the AU in the “Prohibition of Plastics for a Pollution Free Africa”.
