President João Lourenço urges judges to respect the law

Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, exhorted, this Friday, in Luanda, the two new judges of the Constitutional Court to respect the law and the Constitution of the Republic.

João Lourenço intervened at the inauguration ceremony of the advisory judges of the Constitutional Court Victória Manuel da Silva Izata and Victorino Domingos Hossi, both elected by the National Assembly.

Victória da Silva Izata, who will also assume the position of vice-president of the Constitutional Court, was proposed by the MPLA parliamentary group, to occupy the vacancy opened with the retirement of judge Guilhermina Contreiras da Costa Prata. Victorino Hossi was proposed by UNITA.

For the Statesman, “it is an honor, but also a great responsibility to be part of a Court like the Constitutional”.

The President of the Republic hopes that the actions of judges will always take into account compliance with the law and the Constitution of the Republic.

The Constitutional Court is, under the terms of the Constitution of the Republic of Angola, the supreme body of constitutional jurisdiction, which is responsible, in general, for administering justice in legal-constitutional matters.

It is composed of eleven judges appointed from among jurists and magistrates, four (4) judges appointed by the President of the Republic, including the President of the Court, four elected by the National Assembly by a two-thirds majority of the Deputies in office, including the deputy President of the Court, two elected by the Superior Council for the Judiciary and one judge selected through a public tender.

Counselor judges are appointed for a non-renewable term of seven years and enjoy the guarantees of independence, immovability and impartiality of judges of other courts.

The designation and election of advisory judges to the Constitutional Court is carried out taking into account the principles of continuity of the body, reasonableness, timeliness and necessity.

In the National Assembly, the election process for judges takes into account the principle of proportional representation.

Accordingly, with the need to elect the Vice President of the Constitutional Court, the MPLA Parliamentary Group, in obedience to the principle of continuity of the body, proposed the candidacy of the Counselor Judge of the Constitutional Court Victória Manuel da Silva Izata.
