Africa-Press – Angola. The diplomat Joaquim do Espírito Santo presented, this Friday, his credentials to the governor-general of Canada, Mary J. May Simon, beginning his role as extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador of Angola in this country.
The accreditation ceremony took place at the governor-general’s official residence in Rideau Hall, Ottawa, followed by a meeting dedicated to bilateral cooperation, according to a press release from the diplomatic representation that reached.
Joaquim do Espírito Santo, who will perform his role as non-resident ambassador, took the opportunity to express the Angolan Government’s desire to promote a meeting, at the highest level, in order to deepen bilateral cooperation relations.
He thanked the Government of Canada for its support for the opening of the Consulate of Angola in Toronto, which is due to open soon.
“With this step, the country will be able to continue providing local assistance to the Angolan community residing in Canada”, he said.
In turn, the governor-general highlighted the importance of Angola’s presence in Canada, a much-awaited and significant act, as it allows the relaunch of cooperation between the two countries.
Angola and Canada established political-diplomatic relations in February 1978. Within the framework of these relations, the two countries have always maintained friendly cooperation ties, which resulted in the signing of various legal instruments and the holding of business and economic forums.
As well as Angola, the credentials were presented by the ambassadors of the Republics of Costa Rica, Mauritius, the Democratic Republic of Laos and the Independent State of Somoa.
