Africa-Press – Angola. The Angolan Ombudsman, Florbela Araújo, participates, since Wednesday, in Johannesburg, South Africa, in the Regional Seminar on Freedom of Expression and Access to Information for Lusophone Africa.

The information was advanced this Thursday, in a note, by the Department of Institutional Communication and Press of the Ombudsman’s Office.

The document informs that the participation of the Ombudsman in the aforementioned event comes within the scope of her role as president of the Network of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) of Ombudsmen and National Human Rights Commissions.

The seminar aims to promote awareness and dissemination of the Declaration on the Principles of Freedom of Expression and Access to Information in Africa (2019 Declaration).

The event constitutes, continues the note, an opportunity to consolidate the importance and recognition that has been attributed to the Ombudsman, in the national and international context.

The seminar also aims to ensure cooperation with international institutions and organizations in the field of fundamental rights and, therefore, human rights.

The opening ceremony of the event was in charge of Commissioner Remy Ngoy Lumbu, president of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, who highlighted, in his speech, the importance of the right to freedom of expression.

The first day of the meeting was marked by several interventions, with emphasis on that of Commissioner Maria Teresa Manuela, National Rapporteur for Lusophone Countries of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
