Africa-Press – Angola. Comoros will assume the rotating presidency of the African Union (AU) for 2023, during the organization’s 36th Summit of Heads of State and Government, which takes place Saturday and Sunday.
This will be the first time that island nation will carry out the task, this after Kenya withdrew its candidacy.
President Azali Assoumani and his Kenyan counterpart, William Ruto, lobbied separately for the top job, but after a meeting on the sidelines of the US-Africa summit, which took place in Washington in December 2022, Kenya eventually withdrew.
In a statement made recently, the president of Comoros thanked Kenya, saying that the decision showed “Nairobi’s commitment to promoting unity and stability in the East African region”.
The 36th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU), which starts Saturday, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, will count on the participation of President João Lourenço.
The Angolan statesman, “Champion of the African Union for Peace and Reconciliation”, is expected this Thursday in the Ethiopian capital.
In the days leading up to the Summit, the Angolan Head of State has scheduled audiences with different personalities in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.
The 36th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the AU has as one of the main points on the agenda the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement (AfCFTA).
The Summit’s work also includes aspects related to security on the continent and the application of Agenda 2063.

Comoros, officially the Union of Comoros, is an independent country in southern Africa, located at the northern end of the Mozambique Channel on the east coast of Africa. Its capital is the city of Moroni.
Comoros is the fourth smallest country in Africa by land area. The Head of State of that island nation, Azali Assoumani, is 64 years old.
The African Union (AU), created in 2002, is the successor organization of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), an international diplomatic institution founded on May 25, 1963, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Currently with 55 Member States, its objectives are the promotion of democracy, peace, human rights and economic development in Africa.
All Member States together cover an area of 30.32 million square kilometers and 1.39 billion people.
