Africa-Press – Angola. The Peace and Security Council of the African Union (PSC) meets on Friday (17) in Addis Ababa, capital of Ethiopia, in a special session dedicated to the situation in the East of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Angola’s role in the pacification of the DRC will once again be highlighted at this meeting, convened by South Africa, in its capacity as president of the Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the AU for the month of February.

The deteriorating situation in eastern DRC requires urgent attention from the African Union (AU) and its Peace and Security Council, in particular based on its mandate with a focus on promoting peace and stability in Africa.

The PSC will analyze the need for broader involvement of the AU, Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), International Conference on the Great Lakes Region, SADC and UN in efforts to silence the guns in the DRC.

The Angolan ambassador to Ethiopia, Francisco da Cruz, said that the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, was invited to participate in that meeting, to provide his contribution and provide information on the evolution of the situation in the DRC “and the efforts that Angola has been doing that are conducive to peace and stability in that neighboring and sister country”.

The also permanent representative of Angola to the AU considered holding the meeting of capital importance, in order to achieve greater alignment between the processes of Luanda and Nairobi, two complementary initiatives for peace and stability in the DRC.

Francisco da Cruz believes that it is necessary to mobilize greater support and cooperation from various actors, namely the African Union, the regional economic communities and the United Nations, for the joint implementation of existing initiatives.

Fighting in eastern DRC between government forces and M23 rebels has heightened tensions between Kinshasa and Kigali.

President João Lourenço, who chairs the International Conference for the Great Lakes Region (CIRGL), is also the mediator of the African Union (AU) in the crisis between Rwanda and the DRC.

A summit organized in Angola on November 23, 2022, called for a ceasefire and the consequent withdrawal of the opposing forces that are on the ground.
