Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, participated this Friday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in the meeting of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union (AU), which reviewed the situation in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The meeting, which was attended by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, the President of the AU Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, was convened by South Africa in its capacity as President of the Peace and Security Council (PSC) of UA for the month of February.

The deteriorating situation in eastern DRC requires urgent attention from the African Union (AU) and its Peace and Security Council, in particular based on their mandate to promote peace and stability in Africa.

At the end of the special session, which took place on the sidelines of the 36th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the AU, which opens on Saturday in Addis Ababa, there were no statements made to the press, the journalists being referred to a final communiqué which will be also announced on Saturday.

Earlier, President João Lourenço, who presides over the International Conference for the Great Lakes Region (CIRGL), and is the African Union (AU) mediator in the crisis between Rwanda and the DRC, led a meeting, also dedicated to the situation in East of the DRC.

He defended, on the occasion, the cantonment of the M23 forces, their disarmament and, consequently, their reintegration into Congolese society (DRC).
