King of Bailundo expresses interest in defending citizens' rights

Africa-Press – Angola. The King of Bailundo, Tchongolola Tchongonga, manifested, this Thursday, the interest of the traditional authorities to continue to cooperate with the Justice bodies in the defense of the rights, freedoms and guarantees of the citizen.

The Sovereign’s interest was expressed to the press, at the end of a meeting with the deputy ombudsman, Aguinaldo Cristóvão, held in Ombala Yo Mbalundo, on the outskirts of the municipal town of Bailundo, 75 kilometers north of the city of Huambo.

On the occasion, the King of Bailundo referred that the defense of citizens’ rights, above all, of the rural community, linked to Customary Law, constitutes the focus of traditional authorities.

He defended the holding of permanent interaction meetings between the chiefs and the justice bodies, so that no citizen is left out in the safeguarding of social well-being and the preservation of peace.

He was satisfied with the announcement of the implementation, soon, of the Ombudsman’s services in the municipality of Bailundo, as it will help defend the rights, freedoms and guarantees of the citizen.

Sovereign Tchongoloa Tchongonga said he will continue to mobilize traditional authorities to work with the Ombudsman on issues of positive and customary law, as it is an important body for national stability and the promotion of peace in urban and rural communities.

In turn, the deputy ombudsman, Aguinaldo Cristóvão, defended the reinforcement of the dissemination of content in national languages, so that citizens of rural communities, especially those who do not know how to speak Portuguese, know their rights and know how to intervene, whenever they feel wronged.

He underlined that the Ombudsman’s Office, in its function of defending citizens’ rights, will continue to work with the traditional authorities, to speed up the resolution of the problems of the communities.

He said he had shared information with the King of Bailundo about the body’s work and advocacy methods in Huambo province, in addition to the fact that the technical and human conditions were already being created for the opening of an extension of the Ombudsman services Justice in Bailundo, so that citizens stop traveling to the city of Huambo whenever they see their rights violated.

Aguinaldo Cristóvão, who is in this region of the Central Plateau of Angola for a four-day working visit, led this morning at the official opening ceremony of the headquarters of the provincial services of the Ombudsman’s Office, having then held a meeting with the Provincial Human Rights Committee.

The ombudsman is an independent public entity whose mission is to defend the rights, freedoms and guarantees of citizens, ensuring, through informal means, justice and the legality of public administration activity.
