Africa-Press – Angola. Angola hosts the second edition of the African Basketball Championship for athletes playing in their countries “Afrocan2023”, from 8 to 16 July.

The fact stems from a memorandum of understanding signed, this Monday, in one of the hotel units, in Luanda, between FIBA and the Angolan Basketball Federation (FAB).

The signatories of the agreement were the president of FIBA-Africa, Aníbal Manave and the president of the FAB, Moniz Silva, an action witnessed by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Palmira Barbosa.

On the occasion, the continental sports leader suggested that the competition take place in other provinces, in addition to Luanda, the capital city.

He referred that it is Afrocan’s objective to give greater visibility to the players that evolve in the respective nations, being important that the competition is as comprehensive as possible.

Aníbal Manave praised the Angolan Government for having positively accepted the invitation to organize the continental event which, according to him, will give dignity to players who do not participate in international competitions, despite their sports skills.

He claimed to have found that Angola has “excellent” infrastructure, citing as an example the pavilion Acácias Rubras, in Benguela, which hosted the first qualifying window for the World Cup and the Multiuso do Kilamba, which hosted the fifth and last.

The tournament ended with Angola qualifying for this year’s World Cup in Asia, along with Cape Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, Egypt and South Sudan.

The vice-president of the Angolan Federation of the sport, Sílvio Lemos, congratulated himself on the trust that FIBA has placed in its Angolan branch.

He referred that it was time to draw up a strategy with the Ministry of Youth and Sports to respond satisfactorily to FIBA’s expectations.

In the first edition in 2019, held in Egypt, Angola ranked third, under the guidance of the national coach, Paulo Macedo.
