Experts highlight Angola's role in mediating conflicts in Africa

Africa-Press – Angola. Angola’s maturity in mediating and resolving conflicts in Africa, with a view to maintaining peace on the continent, was highlighted this Wednesday, in Luena, by political scientists.

When analyzing Angola’s role in mediating the crisis between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), specialists in International Relations and Political Science highlighted the “old tradition” and maturity in the management of these “sensitive” processes.

The specialist in International Relations Makonga Nadine considers positive the determination of the President of the Republic in the search for stability and peace in the continent.

The professor of Security and Defense Policy, History of Diplomacy and Consular Diplomatic Law understands that Angola is “transporting” to the African panorama its experience acquired over the years of armed conflict, with a view to achieving peace on the continent.

According to the academic, Angolan foreign policy, represented by the President of the Republic, has favored relations with neighboring countries, applying an active, permanent diplomacy, gaining prestige and visibility on the world stage.

In order to achieve peace in the DRC and prevent other aggressions, he proposed compliance with the principle of collective responsibility of States, as well as the creation of an entity with supremacy in SADC, capable of sanctioning countries and movements that “trample” security in the DRC. region.

On the other hand, he encouraged President João Lourenço, as the “AU Champion for Peace and Reconciliation”, to continue with the same commitment and determination in his mediating role, within the framework of SADC collective security, to attract more investments in region.

Political scientist Pedro Caiombo said that Angola’s foreign policy is a continuation of the interest that the country has always shown, since its independence, in the pacification and stability of the SADC region and the continent.

The academic considers that, with the constant movements of peace mediation, Angola is asserting itself in the African panorama, becoming an important “player” for the great nations and organizations in the management of conflicts.

He added that the mediation of conflicts on the continent must continue, since Africa needs peace to assert itself as a true power and evolve in technological and scientific investment.

President João Lourenço chairs the International Conference for the Great Lakes Region (CIRGL), and is the African Union (AU) mediator in the crisis between Rwanda and the DRC.
