Africa-Press – Angola. Rehabilitation works on the bridge over the Luando river, in the municipality of Cuemba, Bié province, could start later this year, with a view to facilitating trade with the province of Malange.

Located in the commune of Luando, the infrastructure, 15 meters long and seven meters wide, was destroyed more than 30 years ago, during the armed conflict. It has already been inspected by the Government and local technicians.

Speaking to the local press, the provincial governor, Pereira Alfredo, underlined that the work should be included in the next programs that the local executive will carry out.

He added that the recovery of the bridge, in addition to facilitating the movement of people and goods, will attract more investors and tourists, as the commune has one of the best falls over the said river.

Meanwhile, the municipal mayor of Cuemba, António Luís, recalled that, at the moment, circulation between the population of Bié and Malange is cut off, which is why he requested the restoration of the bridge as soon as possible.

He added that its rehabilitation could enable local peasants to promote agriculture and safely transport field products.

The population of the commune of Luando, which is 105 kilometers from the center of Cuemba, has been asking for the rehabilitation of the infrastructure for years, to facilitate commercial exchanges with the neighboring province of Malange.

At this moment, in a first phase, the Government recovered the 105 kilometers of earthworks that connect Luando to Cuemba.

In this section, five bridges were rehabilitated under the PIIM.

The commune of Luando has an estimated population of around 10,000 inhabitants, mostly peasants, who are dedicated to the cultivation of maize, beans, cassava, various vegetables, citrus fruits and other products.

They also carry out hunting and continental fishing, as well as raising cattle, pigs, goats and other animals.
