Africa-Press – Angola. The MPLA regretted, this Wednesday, the death of Lieutenant General in the Reforma, Lourenço Diogo Contreiras Neto, which occurred in the early hours of Wednesday (7), in Luanda, due to illness.
In a note, the MPLA states that Lourenço Diogo Contreiras Neto was a nationalist who dedicated the best years of his life serving the MPLA, with an admirable sense of party discipline and zeal in fulfilling the missions of the State.
“The death of Comrade Lourenço Diogo Contreiras Neto represents the loss of a front-line militant, knowledgeable about the historical-revolutionary path of Angola and the MPLA”, reads the document.
Due to the misfortune, the note continues, the Political Bureau of the MPLA Central Committee bows to the memory of the deceased and addresses the bereaved family with “heartfelt condolences.
Born in the locality of Calubunze, municipality of Icolo e Bengo, province of Luanda, Lourenço Diogo Contreiras Neto, joined the MPLA in 1957, integrating the guerrilla forces that participated in the process of the Armed Struggle for National Liberation.
Among other functions, Lourenço Diogo Contreiras Neto held the position of Deputy Minister of Former Combatants and Veterans of the Fatherland (2000/2008), after having been Head of Department and Director of Human Resources at Sonangol, in 1991.
He was also a member of the National Assembly, where he served two terms (2008-2012) and (20012-2017).
