Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, showed solidarity this Friday with the victims of tropical storm Freddy, in Mozambique and Malawi, which resulted in several deaths, displacement and the destruction of important infrastructures.

In separate messages, addressed to his counterparts in Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, and Malawi, Lazarus Chakwera, the Angolan Head of State informs that he is following with concern the latest events resulting from the passage of tropical storm Freddy.

In the letter to President Filipe Nyusi, João Lourenço refers to the fact that the storm caused the death of dozens of citizens in Mozambique.

In another letter, to President Lazarus Chakwera, the Angolan Head of State underlines the death of hundreds of citizens in the Republic of Malawi, which “also left thousands of people displaced”.

“I share (…) the pain of the relatives of the victims of this tragic event”, reads the letter in which the Angolan statesman expressed “heartfelt condolences” to the bereaved families.

Freddy is one of the strongest storms ever recorded in the southern hemisphere. It hit central Mozambique on Saturday, causing widespread flooding, before moving inland towards Malawi with torrential rains that triggered landslides.
