Africa-Press – Angola. A group of 150 young people from Luanda and Cuando Cubango visited the memorial of the Battle of Cuito Cuanavale Wednesday, as part of March 23, the Liberation Day of Southern Africa.

The excursion, held under the motto “Know the paths that led us to Independence and Peace”, also aimed to take young people to know the protagonists of the famous Battle of Cuito Cianavale and, above all, its impact on the Independence of Namibia, on the abolition apartheid in South Africa, the stability and peace of the Southern African Region.

Speaking to the press, the coordinator of the delegation of young people from Luanda, Sebastião Gaspar, asked the government and other institutions to publicize the achievements of the heroes of this battle, which celebrated its 35th anniversary on the 23rd of this month.

The delegation of young people, during their stay in the municipality of Cuito Cuanavale, 189 kilometers east of the city of Manongue, capital of Cuando Cubango, also visited the Tumpu triangle, ongoing works of the Integrated Plan of Intervention in Municipalities (PIIM), among other tourist attractions in that area.

The Battle of Cuíto Cuanavale was the biggest military confrontation of the war in Angola, which took place between November 15, 1987 and March 23, 1988, between the armies of Angola and Cuba against the military forces of UNITA and the apartheid regime of South Africa. South.

The event became the decisive turning point in the war that dragged on for many years, encouraging the signing of the New York Accords, which led to the implementation of UN Security Council resolution 435/78, the withdrawal of Cuban forces and South African of Angola, the independence of Namibia and the end of the regime of racial segregation in South Africa
