Africa-Press – Angola. The National Swimming Team won, this Wednesday, 14 medals on the first day of the African Swimming Championship in zone IV, taking place at the Alvalade swimming pool, Luanda.

There are four gold, five silver and five bronze medals, a record never before achieved by the national team, after nine participations in the event.

The attraction of the day, among others, was focused on the 100 meters backstroke, where Lia Lima, with a mark of 1:13:31, took the gold, in female seniors.

The experienced athlete was seconded by South African Leah Christie (1.13.53), followed by Namibian Maya Stange (1.15.61).

Still in senior female, Maria Freitas was crowned champion in the 50 m breaststroke, with a time of 35.95.

In this event, the silver went to the South African Leah Christie, with a time of 36.13 and the bronze to the Namibian Maya Stange (37.34).

There was also a masters competition in which Carlos Alberto, in an isolated event of the 100m backstroke, secured the gold (1.10.53).

Regarding the silverware, it was obtained by Rhanya Santo, in the 800 m freestyle juvenile (10.25.55). The first place went to the Namibian Ainoa Naukosho (10.10.10), while in third place was the athlete from Mauritius Chloe (10.31.25).

The Angolan N’hara Fernandes, in the 50 m breaststroke, was second (37.02) and failed to revalidate this event won by the South African Farhah Valli (36.93). Zambian Tamenji Miti won bronze (37.68).

In men, José Panzo, in the 50m breaststroke master, took second place (34.03). Matthew Shone, from Zambia, was in first place (33.35), while Refiloe Chopo from Lesotho occupied the third and last position on the podium (37.73).

Over the same distance, Santiago Guimarães was runner-up (37.99), while Essuatine Luca Fraser was first (33.95). Twanese Leruo Bakwena won bronze (38.85).

The experienced Herinque Mascarenhas snatched the silver with a mark of 8:58:34.
