Africa-Press – Angola. The climate services program for the SADC region called “ClimSa” was launched this Tuesday in Luanda by the minister of Telecommunications, Information Technology and Social Communication, Mário Augusto Oliveira.

The ClimSa program, which aims to provide up-to-date climate information, was presented during the workshop on climate services in the SADC region, which runs from the 8th to the 13th of May, with Angola being the focal country.

The minister, who was speaking at the opening of the event, said that the creation of communication channels and engagement processes with national institutions, as well as raising awareness and initiating the technical implementation of activities in each country, within the scope of the climate services program and related applications SADC Climate, are the main objectives of the event.

Mário Augusto said that Angola was selected as the focal country by the member states, in September 2021, for the implementation of a set of activities, such as the development and demonstration of a national chain of production of climate services and the integration of the perspective of the same services in national policy and programmes.

The programme’s objective, according to Mário Oliveira, is to contribute to the efforts of SADC member countries to adapt to climate change, providing science-based services to national and regional planning processes.

“Which implies strengthening the value chain of climate services through the development of the capacities of decision-makers at all levels to effectively use information and climate services”, he said.

In turn, the director general of INAMET, João Afonso, who was speaking on the sidelines of the event, informed that the program had undergone an evaluation, where the country presented the best report among the participants, due to the modernization system that is being implemented. in INAMET.

The said privilege, according to the official, is the guarantee that Angola must maintain the conditions of the member countries so that they have access to climate information.

The program is expected to provide weather updates and early warning to support climate-sensitive sectors such as the water-energy nexus – food security.

The objectives also include improving the technical capacity of producers and users of climate information, in order to encourage the use of climate monitoring and forecasting products in the management of climate risks and environmental management.
