Government plans to create a Cyber Security Agency

Africa-Press – Angola. The Minister of State for Economic Coordination, Manuel Nunes Júnior, announced this Wednesday the creation of a Cybersecurity Agency to coordinate cybersecurity initiatives, monitor and prepare responses to threats in real time.

The creation of the agency comes within the scope of the National Cybersecurity Strategy, which involves policies and measures to protect its systems and critical infrastructures against cybernetics.

Speaking at the opening of the 1st Forum on Cybersecurity promoted by the Ministry of Telecommunications, Information Technologies and Social Communication (MINTTICS), Nunes Júnior underlined that the agency was created to guarantee the supply and processing of data, with a view to creating increasingly consistent and realistic public policies.

“This strategy should also include actions to raise awareness and educate the population about the importance of cybersecurity”, he said.

For Manuel Nunes Júnior, all actions must be complemented with measures that guarantee the protection of data and information systems.

In his view, the existing legal framework needs to be strengthened and updated, as a result of the great technological development that is registered in the world.

Legislation must also be prepared in the context of cybersecurity and “severe” penalties must be clear for possible cyber crimes, in order to deter aggressors and criminals.

Another focus at the Cybersecurity Academy

Nunes Júnior also spoke about the need to launch the Cybersecurity Academy, with the aim of preparing the market and increasing the quality and quantity of technical staff, especially recent graduates in this area.

“Companies and government organizations should invest in training their employees in cybersecurity, to ensure that they are aware of the risks and know how to contribute to the protection of company data”, he emphasized.

For the minister, cybersecurity should not be seen as an issue that can be resolved only by the Executive.

“It is the responsibility of all users in the cybernetic world to find the best solutions to foster a culture of cybersecurity in institutions and companies, adopting the best cyber hygiene practices and investing in issues related to digital and physical security, among other actions”, he reinforced. .

Manuel Nunes Júnior highlighted that the Executive has been working to guarantee society access to the internet and information, both for the public and private sectors, striving for a national scope.

In this respect, he continued, highlighting the investments made that enabled the entry into operation of the international submarine cables SACS and Monet, the first connection between Africa and the Americas, from the South Atlantic.

He also cited the completion of the construction of the Angosat-2 Satellite, the start-up of the National Monitoring Center for the Electric Radio Spectrum, the National Fiber Optic Network, the entry of new telecommunications operators and the granting of a 5G license.

The expansion across the national territory of the network of Mediatheques of Angola, within the scope of massification and digital inclusion, as well as the projects N ́gola digital and Angola Online, are among other accomplishments of the Executive.

The National Cybersecurity Strategy aims to outline the policy approach that guarantees a safe and resilient cyberspace and will establish the Executive’s vision for the five-year period 2022/2027.

The project also serves to identify and establish Cybersecurity actions.

The authorities’ idea is to make Angola a safe country with a society that is aware of cyber security.

The strategy is designed to improve the security, trust and resilience of vital Infrastructures and services, ensuring the reduction of cyber crimes, the protection and defense of critical infrastructures and vital information services, as well as enhancing the use free, secure and efficient use of cyberspace by public and private companies and citizens.
