Africa-Press – Angola. The province of Cunene accounts for 30 percent of meat and animal production in the country – a fact that has allowed a reduction in imports of this product, said yesterday the head of Veterinary Services, Cláudio Simão.

Data from the Veterinary Services (SV) indicate that Cunene has an effective control of one million and 100 thousand head of bovine cattle, two million 150 goats, 75 thousand sheep, 50 thousand pigs, two thousand 700 horses, six thousand donkeys and two million and 500 birds.

Of that livestock, the traditional sector owns 75 percent, and ranchers control 25 percent.

As for meat production in the country, he said that a good part of the biological raw material leaves Cunene alive and goes to other national markets and that is where jobs are created.

The person in charge made it known that in the first four months of this year, 1,202 cattle, 4,658 goats and 123 pigs and 17 horses left the province, both for slaughter or farms for reproductive purposes, which had as destinations the provinces of Luanda, Huíla, Benguela, Malanje and Lunda Norte.

During this period, he highlighted, 945 sanitary guides for animal transit were issued, with a collection of 17 million 384 thousand 726 kwanzas.

Compared to the year 2022, he said that the indicators show a satisfactory evolution, with the registration of 1,563 permits issued, as well as the transit of 1,094 cattle, 5,014 goats, 278 sheep and 464 pigs, allowing the collection of 31 million, 243 thousand 660 kwanzas.

It ensured control of 90 percent of the movement of animals, the result of collaboration between the municipal representations of the Veterinary Services, the National Police, local administrations and traditional power authorities.

He explained that the process of animal transit begins within the communities, after quarantine where they are legalized for movement, in order to prevent theft of cattle.

However, he lamented the lack of industry for the use of animal derivatives.

He made it known that the region does not have a functional industrial slaughterhouse, only five functional slaughterhouses.
