Africa-Press – Angola. The Minister of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas, Diamantino Azevedo, reiterated, Tuesday, in Dakar, Senegal, to maintain transparency in Angola’s extractive sector, to make it more attractive to national and foreign investment.

The process, he recalled, is an initiative of the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, who decided to join Angola as a member of the Initiative for Transparency in the Extractive Industry -EITI.

For Angola, the process is in a phase considered “very important”, which is the preparation of the first report of the EITI-Angola National Committee, whose conclusion is scheduled for December this year, according to the official.

Diamantino Azevedo spoke at the EITI/2023 Global Conference, before the President of the Republic of Senegal, Macky Sall, and Heads of State and Government of member countries.

The Angolan minister said that the report will be submitted to the EITI International Secretariat, in addition to being used to improve the oil, gas and mining sector, so that the revenues increasingly serve the country’s economic development and well-being. of the population.

In his speech, the Angolan official, who is the coordinator of the National Committee of the referred initiative, also shared the work that the country has been carrying out, to achieve the results of the transfer that is sought.

Among other works, Diamantino Azevedo points out legislative reforms and the governance model itself.

“Saying that the ongoing reforms are not static, it is a process that should be continuous”, he advanced.

Diamantino Azevedo, likewise, spoke about the work that Angola undertakes to reduce dependence on the import of crude derivatives, transforming more locally.

Position of the transition maintains

Minister Diamantino Azevedo received applause from the audience when referring to Angola’s position regarding the energy transition.

At this meeting, like others, Diamantino Azevedo made it clear that the energy transition should not be imposed by third countries.

In the case of Angola, he reaffirmed that the country will have its own agenda.

According to the Minister of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas, Angola wants a just transition, a transition with equity that serves the interests of the country and the peoples of Africa, who still see severe energy poverty.

“So that it is known and understood, the energy transition must be fair and balanced”, he underlined, for whom there are minerals that continue to be necessary, calling for caution to be addressed on the subject.

The Angolan official also defends that the starting point of each country should be considered in this aspect of the energy transition.

The EITI/2023 Global Conference, in Dakar, Senegal, marked the 20th anniversary of this organization and brought together representatives from several member countries.

The acceptance of Angola’s membership as a member of the Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (EITI International) took place during the 53rd Meeting of the EITI International Council, held in Brussels (Belgium), between 16 and 17 June 2022.

EITI International is now made up of 57 member countries, Angola being the 28th African country to join the Initiative and one of the three largest oil producers in Africa, alongside Libya and Nigeria.
