Africa-Press – Angola. The access works to the New Luanda International Airport (NAIL), Dr António Agostinho Neto, are running within the established deadlines and are expected to be completed in October this year, guaranteed this Saturday, the Minister of Public Works , Urban Planning and Housing, Carlos dos Santos.
According to the government official, the intervention services on the pavement, on the drainage system, on public lighting and on the construction of bays for the main accesses to the NAIL are in their final stages.
The minister added that, along National Road 230 (EN-230), several bays were built, to prevent motorists from stopping on the main axis of the road, a fact that would reduce possible slow traffic situations, which currently occurs.
Also on the EN-230 and on Avenida Fidel de Castro, work on improving the pavement, drainage system and public lighting is in the final stretch.
Likewise, the leader who was speaking to the press, on the sidelines of President João Lourenço’s visit to the new Luanda airport, said that in terms of the EN-100 and Avenida Kimakienda, the interventions to improve traffic are proceeding smoothly, and within of the landmarks.
Also on national road 230, at the access to the new airport, there are works such as the viaduct that will be completed by October this year, while on Avenida Fidel de Castro the pavement, drainage system and public lighting are being repaired.
At the level of Avenida Kimakienda, the same interventions are being carried out to improve traffic, as well as on national road 100, which are short-term measures.
In the medium term, the Government intends to make direct access from Avenida Pedro de Castro Van-duném Loy, passing through Kimbango, crossing the Suave area, exiting on national road 230, which connects to Fidel de Castro.
“These works will effectively improve access to the new Luanda International Airport, whether by road or rail”, asserted the official.
In this sense, the Minister of Public Works, Urban Planning and Housing said that, in 2024, two alternative access routes (entrance and exit) will be built in the Zango district.
Parallel to this initiative, the Zango 8000 centrality section will extend and connect to the EN-230 and cross with the expressway.
Carlos dos Santos also advanced that Luanda’s pedestrian streets will deserve interventions in the near future.
In turn, the Minister of Transport, Ricardo D’Abreu, referred that the construction and accesses to the new airport will be completed by the time of its inauguration.
Regarding the certification, Ricardo D’Abreu said that the process goes through its normal procedures, going through the different stages for its conclusion, and there are no reasons for concern.
The minister referred that, in a first phase, the airport will receive a provisional certification, a normal act and, subsequently, the definitive phase, and this procedure does not create any operational limitation, as they constitute actions inherent to the airport certification process.
“The Angolan Executive will make available to passengers a world-class, modern, technologically advanced infrastructure, with a process of digitalization of the civil aviation system in terms of all services, both for professionals and for navigation aids and aeronautics”, he asserted.
According to Ricardo D’Abreu, there are other ongoing initiatives, such as the process of transferring the contract to the operation, where the related team is already receiving the functional means of the airport for the operational phase.

The New Luanda International Airport has two double runways and is dimensioned to receive, among others, B747 and A380 aircraft, currently the largest commercial aircraft.
The southern runway, the largest at the airport, measures 4,000 meters by 60 meters in width, and received, in June 2022, the first experimental flight of a Boeing 777 aircraft from the national flag company TAAG.
The airport project contemplates the construction of an airport city that will cover an area of 75 square kilometers.
