Africa-Press – Angola. The United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Combating Terrorism, Vladimir Voronkov, highlighted, Thursday, in New York, Angola’s role in actions to combat and prevent terrorism on the African continent.
Vladimir Voronkov, who was speaking at a meeting with the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Esmeralda Mendonça, head of the Angolan delegation at the 3rd United Nations High Level Conference on Combating Terrorism, praised Angola’s contribution to the holding of the African Summit of Fight Against Terrorism, scheduled for March 2024, in Nigeria.
During the meeting, the two entities reiterated the need to strengthen cooperation between Angola and the United Nations Office for Combating Terrorism (UNOCT), with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the parties, which may take effect shortly, during the visit to Angola by the UN Under-Secretary-General for Combating Terrorism.
On her turn, Esmeralda Mendonça reaffirmed the role of preventive diplomacy in Angola’s Foreign Policy, which has been making efforts in the search for peaceful solutions to various conflicts, particularly on the African continent.
Esmeralda Mendonça acknowledged that the Global Strategy Against Terrorism is an extremely important instrument, as it will bring new dynamics to the fight against terrorism in the world.
The official congratulated Vladimir Voronkov for his work in favor of the fight against terrorism and for the organization of the Third United Nations High Level Conference on Combating Terrorism.
The Principal Adviser to the Director General of the Criminal Investigation Service, Destino Pedro, took the opportunity to explain that the review of the National Strategy against Terrorism is underway, which should embrace all the principles of the UN Global Strategy.
Destino Pedro emphasized, however, the need for technical assistance and training of Angolan staff in terms of preventing and combating terrorism.
