SIC seizes more than 200 kilograms of drugs

Africa-Press – Angola. Two hundred and 39 kilograms of marijuana and cocaine were seized from June 2002 to the present date, by the Criminal Investigation Service (SIC), in Cunene province.

The information was provided, Tuesday,, in Ondjiva, by the deputy director of SIC in Cunene, Vitorino Velupukua, within the scope of the commemorations of the 26th of June, International Day to Combat Drugs.

He made it known that the amounts included 233 kilograms of liamba and six kilograms of cocaine, seized in the interior municipalities and on the border between Angola and Namibia.

He explained that the SIC’s Combating Drug Trafficking Department notified 48 cases, 38 of which were possession and trafficking of marijuana and four of cocaine trafficking.

He reported that 50 citizens, aged between 16 and 61, were arrested, 22 criminal cases were investigated, two were archived and three defendants were submitted to summary judgment and sentenced to three to six months in prison.

“The drug situation in the province is starting to cause concern, as it involves teenagers who are found consuming the substance in schools, having adults as their source of purchase,” he said.

Vitorino Velupukua encouraged society to be more involved in combat and denunciation actions, to discourage the consumption and sale of drugs, which is responsible for thousands of deaths every year.

International Day Against Drugs is celebrated on 26 June. The date was created by the United Nations and aims to make the population aware of the problems triggered by drugs to individuals who consume it and to society.

Currently, the use and abuse of alcohol and other drugs constitute one of the most worrying public health problems in the world, considering the magnitude and diversity of aspects involved.
