Children with problems with medullary aplasia, a disease that causes a decrease in the production of blood cells, may, until the end of this year, undergo bone marrow transplants in the country, with the inauguration, today, in Luanda, of the Pediatric Hematological Institute Dr.Victória do Espírito Santo.

The director general of the David Bernardino Pediatric Hospital, Francisco Domingos, explained that the bone marrow transplant process, in an initial phase, will have the support of foreign technicians, who will provide training support to professionals. national authorities, so that, in the future, they can continue the referred procedure.

The doctor said that care at the health institution will be done by referenced regimen, but patients in consultation who have any complications will have the opportunity to receive the proper treatment.

“In case of hospitalization, these patients will be referred to the David Bernardino Hospital or the Cancer Control Institute”, said doctor Francisco Domingos.

Regarding the cause of the immunological alteration, studies indicate that it is generally unknown, but in some cases it is related to certain infections, prolonged contact with chemicals, such as some solvents and pesticides, medications, and, in rare cases, it can occur during pregnancy. .

The director of the Pediatric Hospital of Luanda explained that the new care unit, located in the Urban District of Maianga, is part of the Executive’s efforts to improve care for patients in the hematological forum, through a well-prepared diagnosis, qualified treatment and reduce as much as possible the travel of patients abroad.

The doctor explained that hematological diseases are those that compromise the production of blood elements or the functioning of these components, including red blood cells (red blood cells), leukocytes (white blood cells) and platelets, all of which are manufactured in the bone marrow.

Francisco Domingos said that the most prevalent hematological diseases in the country are, among others, sickle cell anemia, hemophilia and platelet disorder.

As for the works at the Instituto Hematológico Pediátrico Dra.Victória do Espírito Santo, completed this year, the official stressed that the work began in 2017.

The building that houses the Dr. Victoria do Espírito Santo Pediatric Hematological Institute has seven floors, offices, observation and treatment rooms, a general and research laboratory, is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment (Siemens brand), with emphasis on X-ray and CAT scans (computed axial tomography).

In addition, the clinical institute has two operating theaters, an intensive care unit, three pre-transplantation rooms and four rooms for carrying out transplants, as well as a morgue, an autopsy area and another for hemotherapy.

The establishment that works next to the Pediatric Hospital of Luanda, also has a library, medicine warehouse, administrative and pedagogical area, services that will be provided by a total of 100 technicians. However, the unit needs 500 professionals for consultation, diagnosis and treatment services under observation.
