Africa-Press – Angola. The state visits of the Presidents of Cuba and Brazil, respectively Miguel Mario Díaz-Canel Bermúdez and Luiz Inácio “Lula” da Silva, aimed at strengthening cooperation with Angola, dominated the political news of the week ending Saturday.
At the invitation of the Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço, the President of Cuba paid a 72-hour visit to the country, which allowed him to meet his Angolan counterpart, participate in a solemn session of the National Assembly and pay homage to the Cuban general Raúl Díaz Arguelles Garcia, who died in combat in Angola in December 1975.
He visited the Angola and Cuba school, built by Cuban technicians in 1988 as part of bilateral cooperation, offered books, planted a tree and defended the need to strengthen relations between the two countries.
Miguel Mario Díaz-Canel Bermúdez went to the António Agostinho Neto Memorial, where he paid homage to the Founder of the Angolan Nation.
President João Lourenço was invited for an official visit to Cuba, in order to participate in the Summit of the Group of 77+China, in Havana, between the 15th and 16th of September this year.
The invitation, already accepted by President João Lourenço, was made by his Cuban counterpart, Miguel Mario Díaz-Canel Bermúdez.
The Group of 77+China is a coalition of countries, founded in 1964, and aimed at promoting the collective economic interests of the members, as well as creating a greater capacity for joint negotiation.
The President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio “Lula” da Silva, made a 96-hour State visit, with a view to reinforcing bilateral cooperation and strengthening the ties of friendship between the two peoples.
As part of his stay, the Republics of Angola and Brazil signed seven (7) new bilateral cooperation agreements.
These are agreements in the field of carrying out professional activities for the remuneration of dependents of the diplomatic, consular, military, administrative and technical staff of the diplomatic and consular missions, as well as cooperation in sustainable tourism, two instruments initialed by the holders of Foreign Affairs of Angola and from Brazil, Téte António and Mauro Vieira, respectively.
Likewise, the Memorandum of Understanding in the field of Agriculture was signed, with a view to stimulating broad development in the fields of agricultural and livestock systems.
In the field of Health, the parties agreed on a Cooperation project for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Leprosy/leprosy, which will improve the assistance provided to patients in the Angolan health system with regard to early detection and treatment of the disease.
The document was signed by the Ministers of Health of Angola and Brazil, Silva Lutucuta and Nisia Trindade, respectively.
The two countries also signed an agreement in the area of Education, the project of which is called “Escola para Todos”, an initiative that foresees consolidating the national policy of special education oriented towards school inclusion.
During his stay, President João Lourenço decorated his Brazilian counterpart, Lula da Silva, with the “Ordem António Agostinho Neto”, the highest distinction of the Angolan State.
The Brazilian President awarded his counterpart João Lourenço with the Ordem Nacional do Cruzeiro do Sul, a title that honors notable personalities born outside the country.
This week, the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, reiterated the Executive’s strategy regarding the commitment to promoting Angolan women, including in management positions in the State apparatus.
The Angolan Head of State intervened at the swearing-in ceremony of Counselor Judge Efigénia Mariquinha dos Santos Lima Clemente, in her capacity as vice-president of the Supreme Court (TS).
“We will continue to bet on this fringe of society in the certainty that this is the only way we will know how to build a great country with men and women, side by side, without discrimination, for all functions (…), expressed the President of the Republic.
Also noteworthy was the appointment, by the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, of Teresa Manuel Bento da Silva as Deputy General Director of the External Intelligence Service (SIE), replacing Mário António da Costa Dias, exonerated moments before.
The President of the Republic decreed the appointment and dismissal after “hearing the National Security Council”.
Another political highlight of the week was the second ordinary session of the National Road and Traffic Planning Council (CNVOT), chaired by the Vice-President of the Republic, Esperança da Costa, which discussed, among other topics, the situation of road accidents in the first half of the year of the current year.
The meeting also served to address “key prevention and road safety actions”, to be implemented by December 31st.
The CNVOT is the consultation body for the Holder of Executive Power in matters relating to road and traffic ordering at national level. It is coordinated by the Vice-President of the Republic.
The Ministry of the Interior held its first extraordinary extended advisory council, from the 22nd to the 23rd of this month, in Luanda. On the occasion, Minister Eugénio Laborinho reaffirmed the importance of greater collaboration between civil society and public security authorities in the fight against crime in the country.
In this sense, the minister reiterated the appeal to citizens, churches, traditional authorities, residents’ commissions, civil associations, among other social actors, to participate in the efforts undertaken by the Ministry of the Interior to reduce the crime rate, by denouncing cases and involved.
Also in this period, the Angolan ombudsman, Florbela Araújo, defended the alteration of the laws of Land and Territory Planning, to reduce cases of conflicts of illegal occupation of lands in the country.
When intervening in a working meeting with the Minister of Public Works, Urbanism and Housing, Carlos dos Santos, the provider considered that there is a mismatch between the two legal diplomas, taking into account the complaints received by its institution.
