Africa-Press – Angola. The future centrality of Mbanza Kongo, headquarters of the province of Zaire, could be built in the village of Sangui, 40 kilometers from the center of this World Heritage city.
The proposal for the location of this housing project, which will have 1,500 apartments, was presented this Thursday, in Mbanza Kongo, by the company Kora-Angola, a developer of real estate projects in the country.
Other proposed areas, in a meeting that brought together members of the Provincial Government and civil society, are the villages of Nkondo and Ave Maria, located on the access road to the border commune of Luvo.
However, Kora-Angola’s proposals were not to the liking of civil society in Mbanza Kongo, who suggested the village of Siesie, on the Luvo road, as being ideal for the implementation of this housing project.
Participants cited factors such as the distance of the company’s proposed locations from the city center of Mbanza Kongo as the reason for their aversion, combined with the lack of public transport network in the region.
Speaking to the press at the end of the meeting, the deputy governor for the technical sector and infrastructure, Ângela Diogo, defended that the project be implemented in the town of Sangui, Nkiende commune.
He justified that some areas surrounding the city of Mbanza Kongo, proposed by the participants, are rugged and technically unviable areas, with a risk of ravines appearing in the future.
He also pointed out the fact that a project of this nature, in very hilly areas, entails high financial costs, as it will require additional treatment to regularize the soil for the construction of housing.
“The intention is to build 1,500 apartments and social equipment, in a single space, which will require an area of over 60 hectares, which will include future areas destined for the directed self-construction program”, highlighted the vice-governor.
Ângela Diogo explained that the area chosen by the competent authorities (Sangui) is an area close to the future Mbanza Kongo international airport and where the city is expected to expand and implement other development projects.
“We have to start from a technical and sustainability point of view, to definitively choose the area where the future center of Mbanza Kongo will be built”, emphasized the person in charge.
The province of Zaire was awarded two housing centers with 1,500 apartments each, within the scope of the Angolan Executive’s Housing Development Program (PFA), one of 1,500 homes in Mbanza Kongo and the same number for the municipality of Soyo.
Participating in the meeting, witnessed by the governor of Zaire, Adriano Mendes de Carvalho, were members of the government, civil society organizations, academics, representatives of traditional authorities and religious entities, among others.
