SIC arrests Chinese for stealing 1,800 KVA of electricity in Luena

Africa-Press – Angola. Four citizens of Chinese nationality were, on Friday, detained by the Criminal Investigation Service (SIC), accused of theft of a power of 1,800 KVA of electricity from the public network, for alleged powering of cryptocurrency servers.

Speaking this Saturday, the SIC/Moxico spokesperson, Elisiário dos Passos, said that the aforementioned electrical energy power, equivalent to more than 500 household connections, enough to benefit around two thousand and 500 people, was used by the company of the aforementioned citizens, to power high-power electronic means to carry out cryptocurrency (Bitcoin) mining activities.

According to the official, initially the aforementioned citizens requested a license from the administrative authorities to set up mills to process cassava.

“This company signed a legal contract to benefit two thousand KVA of energy, however, to carry out the said activity they diverted 1,800 KVA, totaling 3800 KVA of electrical energy”, he added.

The aforementioned act, he continued, caused a monthly loss valued at three million kwanzas to the State, with the SIC seizing several electronic media on the spot.

The aforementioned citizens will be present to the guarantee judge for the legal procedures.
