Africa-Press – Angola. The Ministry of the Interior (MININT) intends to continue investing in women to occupy positions of management, command and leadership, always observing the principles of competence and merit, guaranteed, yesterday, in Luanda, the minister Eugénio Laborinho.
The minister, who was speaking during the event alluding to International Women’s Day at the Ministry of the Interior, highlighted the qualities of gender and also guaranteed the materialization of the career progression process in all bodies, paying special attention to women who gather requirements for that purpose
“We have no doubts about your commitment and resilience, but it is important that you train yourselves, overcome yourselves and be ready for current and future challenges”, highlighted the minister.
Present at the act, the Secretary of State for the Family and Promotion of Women, Elsa Barber, said that the participation of women in peace processes and conflict resolution in the world has taken timid steps, despite the facts that show that their participation in negotiating tables increase the chances of signing peace agreements.
On October 30, 2020, he said, the United Nations Security Council adopted resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security, which recognizes the impact of armed conflict on women and girls.
Elsa Barber also highlighted the Executive’s concern to work on the inclusion of women in the aforementioned processes, investing in multisectoral projects and strategies, for the adoption of a new model of public defense and security.
According to Elsa Barber, the index on good governance in Africa shows that the country has improved in the indicator on gender equality, ranking 24th among 54 countries evaluated.
He recognized that, despite the progress made, the results still fall far short of expectations, as the implementation of issues related to gender equality is still largely neglected.
“We are sure that this journey will allow us to make a deep and transversal introspection on the importance and contribution of all the living forces of society in the fight for effective equality between men and women”, he said.
Elsa Barber appealed to MININT to join the campaign “Together Against Marriages and Early Pregnancies in Angola”, which opened on the 8th, as well as to support the project of the Ministry of Social Action, Family and Women Promotion, which aims to engage men in the fight against all forms of discrimination against women.
Women want greater equality
The Interior Minister’s consultant for human rights and the promotion of women, Maria Major, defended the need for gender balance in the Ministry, as long as they are committed to zealously fulfilling the tasks proposed to them.
“We can see, in the female staff chapter, a substantial reduction in management and leadership positions, as a result of the organic restructuring of the central executive bodies, where women were the most penalized”, underlined Maria Major.
He informed that there are 17,083 employees in management and leadership positions, totaling 11 percent, of which only 1.4 percent are female, out of a universe of 26,815 women.
“We appeal to the Minister of the Interior to intervene so that there is a 15 percent increase in women in management and leadership positions and a 20 percent increase in professional careers, so that the MININT’s balance is a fact,” he said.
He pointed out, according to statistical data, the Civil Protection and Fire Service as the only organization with the highest number of women in command positions, many of them commanders of barracks at national level.
She underlined the desire to see more women on advisory boards of central executive bodies and provincial delegations and other MININT directorates, for the existence of a greater balance in the institution.
“We propose the continuous training of women in different specialties, with the aim of increasing their intellectual and professional capacity and improving the provision of services, wherever they are placed”, he highlighted.
