Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the Angolan Cycling Federation, Cremilda Rangel, announced, in the province of Cuanza-Sul, the holding of the first edition of the Cidade do Sumbe Grand Prix.

According to the person in charge, who was speaking to the press at the end of the third stage of the Volta a Angola by bicycle, she said that the sport tends to grow, which is why the aforementioned Grand Prix was held, nationwide, in the city of Sumbe, in May 2024.

The president made it known that the project to expand the sport in the province of Cuanza-Sul is one of FACI’s objectives, as well as showing the world the country’s great tourist potential through cycling.

Cremilda Rangel said that the second Tour of Angola “Alberto da Silva Pepino” has already completed three stages of the eight planned, namely the 5 km prologue, Cubal/Benguela, 150 km and Lobito/Sumbe, 170 km, respectively, the latter considered the most difficult.

Meanwhile, reacting to the Federation’s announcement, the provincial vice-governor of Cuanza Sul, Heitor Alfredo, praised the initiative and assured that, internally, everything will be done to make the aforementioned event happen.

According to the official, the region has suitable areas for holding cycling events and working hard to prepare for this event.

Asked about the widespread use of the sport in the province, Heitor Alfredo revealed that the Sports sector has a project that, due to financial limitations, has been postponed, but which remains among the priorities.

He also praised the fact that the Volta a Angola itinerary had privileged the province of Cuanza Sul to host two stages of this great event, which also aims to promote tourism in the different regions of the country.

He took the opportunity to ask the population of Cuanza-Sul to welcome cyclists as they pass by, demonstrating a feeling of peace and security, and thus making history.

The third stage of 170 km, Lobito/Sumbe, of this edition of the Volta a Angola Alberto da Silva Pepino, was won by the Bai Sicasal Petro athlete, Bruno Araújo, followed by the Cuban Cristian Ramon, from the ACT team in Luanda, and Igor Silva , in third place, from the Jair Transportes team.

110 national and foreign cyclists are taking part in this second edition of the Volta a Angola.
