One hundred and 96 people died and 721 were injured as a result of 530 road accidents that occurred, from January to September this year, in Cuanza Sul, reported, this Thursday, in Sumbe, the head of department of the Provincial Road Council and Traffic Planning, Moisés Paulo.
According to the official, who spoke during the body’s first ordinary meeting, compared to the same period in 2022, there was an increase of 38 road accidents, four more deaths and 59 injuries.
He mentioned that the accidents, which also caused material damage valued at 1,006,388,000 kwanzas, occurred in the municipalities of Sumbe, with 156 cases, Porto-Amboim and Cela (61 each), Amboim (45) and Quibala (42), with the National roads 100,110, 120 and 240 were the most affected.
He pointed out the poor technical condition of the vehicles, excessive speed, driving under the influence of alcohol, as well as various infractions of the highway code as the main causes of the accidents.
According to the director, during the period under review, the Department of Traffic and Road Safety (DTSER) seized 141 vehicles, 966 motorcycles, as well as 983 driving licenses and three thousand and 362 other documents for various infractions of the highway code.
Likewise, he added, 28 drivers were arrested and handed over to the Public Prosecutor’s Office for driving under the influence of alcohol.
During the meeting, members of the Provincial Road and Traffic Planning Council analyzed, among other issues, the national road safety and prevention plan for the period 2023-2027.
The province of Cuanza Sul has an estimated population of two million and 200 thousand inhabitants.
