Cape Verde PR augurs profound reforms

Africa-Press – Angola. The President of Cape Verde, José Neves, said, this Wednesday, that despite the advances recorded in several areas, there is an urgent need to undertake profound reforms in his country, which guarantee rapid responses to current socioeconomic challenges.

Speaking at the opening of the 1st International Congress on Science, Innovation and Development in Lusofonia, he stressed that he was aware that only with the diversification and qualification of the production process, with more efficiency and results orientation, will it be possible to accelerate the pace and transform the country.

“For our Archipelago, this virtuous coalition with Universities is of clear importance in resolving many development challenges. If we seize new knowledge and new technologies we will be boosting economic development. This reasoning is supported by examples of countries that grew thanks to the dissemination of science and innovation”, he highlighted.

José Maria Neves defended the need to analyze the situation of university professors, with emphasis on career development based on merit, and it is necessary to create the conditions for university professors to dedicate more time to research.

For you, a University without research is not conceivable, nor is it possible to design a research policy without investment.

He said that development will only be achieved if poverty is eradicated and opportunities shared by all are created, in a country with a market economy, thriving and with intellectual vigor. “And, naturally, with Universities that function as innovation centers, as is the motto of this Congress,” he said.

The Head of State added that, for Cape Verde, the benefits of the event will be obvious, with research and innovation having a positive impact on the sustainable use of scarce resources, the blue economy, the green economy, the digital economy, tourism, increase in renewable energy.

He expressed his enthusiasm and support for the happy initiative of holding the congress, as well as his satisfaction with the fact that the city of Mindelo was chosen to host the event.

The Congress, between conferences and round tables, will address “The Paths to quality scientific research in Lusophony, promoting dialogue between universities, political power and companies”, as well as “Science, technology and innovation in Lusophone countries : challenges and opportunities in the 21st century”.

The event is aimed at researchers, academics, decision-makers, university students and postgraduates from all Portuguese-speaking countries, who work in their countries or in the diaspora.
